Godly Men Want Godly Women, but Preferences May Vary

(What a time for me to start writing again…eek, this is rather long)

A week ago, a blog post has been popping up on my newsfeed from both believers and nonbeliever friends called “Men Prefer Debt Free Virgins without Tattoos”. Lori Alexander of The Transformed Wife is the author of this post as well as thousands of other posts. Based on Titus 2:3-5, she writes with the purpose of mentoring “younger women to be sober, love and obey their husbands, love their children, be chaste, discreet, good, and keepers at home.” I have never heard of her before but she has quite a following with over 80,000 followers on Facebook. The article itself has been commented, shared, and reacted for tens of thousands of times and it has created quite a firestorm on the internet. Open Letters from a Sower – Inspired by the Parable of the Sower

I was reminded and reread the Parable of the Sower recently. This parable is located in Matthew 13:1-23, Mark 4:1-20, and Luke 8:4-15. This is the first of many parables that Jesus told. There is some importance to this parable as well, for understanding why Jesus use parables and understanding the meaning of this parable helps us understand the rest of the parables: “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?” (Mark 4:13)

I Serve at the Pleasure of the King!

I’ve been binge watching some The West Wing this past summer. If you don’t know what The West Wing is, it is a critically acclaimed TV drama about the lives and services of fictional White House staff who work closely with the president.

Know Thy Enemy…And Love Them

Sun Tzu Statue

Sun Tzu was a Chinese military strategist who wrote The Art of War. This document describes many aspects of warfare and identifies different factors and strategies that leads to victory in battles. It’s not only considered as one of the most important military texts in history, but these concepts are also applied to debates, legal fights, businesses competitions, and anything else that use tactics and strategies. One well-known line in this document is a common saying that Sun Tzu finds true in military strategy:

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” (Chapter 3, line 18)

This line reveals a consistent theme that the keys to victories are knowing your opponent and knowing yourself. If you know the strengths, weaknesses, tendencies, and approaches of your enemies as well as yourself, you have the advantage against your opponent in warfare. You can predict moves before they happen, lead opponents to traps, make important decisions, etc, to defeat or destroy your opponents. Read More →

The Scribe Project

Back when I was sophomore in college, I was introduced of a group on Facebook called “the Scribe Project.” (I tried to look for it recently but it seems that the group was has been closed.) It is basically a project of spending the time to copy the entire Bible. I got interested in doing it and made it through a couple of weeks of it, but as the school year became more hectic, I wasn’t able to continue it along with my other responsibilities. Also, from me moving from location to location, I misplaced my previous progress along the way. Fast forward to now, I want to pick this up and complete this as well as use it as Bible study material. So I went and grabbed the biggest binder that I can find along with some (more like a lot of) loose leaf paper and I am motivated to get this done. I encourage anyone to do this. I feel that this would provide an opportunity in studying the Bible deeper as well as give me a greater appreciation towards the scribes of old who devoted their time, skills, and focus in writing and copying down the Word of God. Prosperity Gospel is No Gospel

Human beings have an interesting fascination with abundance and wealth. In many parts of our culture, success is measured by how many profits you make. Holiday seasons are polluted with the chants of consumerism, as sales and commercials tell us to get more stuff. Even this past February, the Lunar New Year was celebrated throughout the world. One of the commonly spoken Chinese greetings is Gong Xi Fa Cai, which literally translates as “Congratulations and Be Prosperous.” It is a wish for others to become more prosperous than the previous year. Why Won’t God Heal Amputees?

Let’s be honest: No one likes to answer tough questions, specifically when they make us feel at a loss for an answer. Our pride tells us that it is an exploitation of our credibility or our witness if we are unable to answer objections towards what we believe. We have imaginations of being mocked as fools. It is considered one of the main reasons why some Christians are afraid to share their faith and would hesitate to do so because they think they are “not ready” or “unworthy”. In other cases, some people would provide any answer to convince others (and might I dare say, themselves) that they are not baffled. They supply answers that are either unsound in human reason or a tactic of avoidance instead of answering the question directly. In my opinion, one of the worst arguments that one can use is to simply hide behind the word “faith,” thinking that it is a sufficient answer lacking no additional thought. In reality, it creates the impression that Christians don’t examine the validity of their beliefs, and act stubbornly rather than believe in truth for the sake of being true.

(Christians), Watch Your Mouth!

Hey everyone,

I wrote a short article at my school’s newspaper Voices section about Christians and the use of profanity. I re-post the article on here so that those who don’t get our newspaper can read it. I’ve made some small edits and additions from my original copy and the one in the paper because there were some minor mistakes that exists in the paper or because I wanted to convey a little bit more. I probably could have written more, but there was a word count limit and I had to get some of my main ideas down to about 800 words. Even though I specifically focus on curse words, I believe that some of the arguments and principles that I write here can be applied in other expressions. If you have an opinion about it, leave a comment!

Christians Then, Christians Now: An Observation from the Epistle of Mathetes to Diognetus

Have you read The Epistle of Mathetes to Diognetus? It is basically a letter like the Pauline Letters in the Bible (Galatians, Colossians, etc). We don’t know who wrote it; it’s not part of the Bible, but it is one of the earliest Christian works that apply the use of apologetics in writing to defend Christianity. Contents include the topics of manmade idols, the difference between the Jews and the Christians, and Jesus coming to the world. What I Think about Jeremy Lin and His Faith

So, I don’t normally plan on writing about sports on this blog, but there was a recent development in the NBA that I want to give some thoughts about. Some of you may or may not know, I am a HUGE San Antonio Spurs fan. Ever since the David Robinson era, I have loved and appreciated how the organization operates and the type of players that they have. Basically, I follow the NBA…devotedly.

However, we are not talking about the Spurs, we are talking about the New York Knicks. Why? Because New York has been struggling in the beginning of the shortened season and their best players started to get injured and then it just went downhill from there. It almost seemed that this possible playoff contender is going to go to the lottery this year…and then, the coach decided to try someone new on the bench, a Taiwanese American second year player who has been warming up the bench to play huge minutes. This player was Jeremy Lin. This kid has been sitting on the bench last year and this year, and then on February 4th, he went from bench warmer to superstar. And this is not just 1 game, he turned around the direction of the team and helped the team to get back to .500 for their record, carrying the entire team for the next few games. People call him Linsanity.
